What's the most important thing to remember when refinishing hardwood flooring? Take your time. Too much haste during any step in the project could result in permanent flaws - regardless of how much time and effort you put into the other steps.
Before we stain and finish a hardwood floor, we need to make sure to start with bare wood. If you are installing a new, unfinished floor, the wood will already be bare. If you are refinishing an existing floor, the professionals at Robar will need to sand the finish down to the bare wood. A couple of pointers:
Existing hardwood floors may have cracks, raised planks or deep scratches. We make all repairs when the wood is bare because it is difficult to do them after it is finished.
Even if you want to maintain the "natural" colour of your wood, you will probably have to apply a stain to the bare wood. Different colours can dramatically change the décor and mood of the room, so choose your stain carefully.
You may need to apply more than one coat of stain, depending on how much stain is absorbed by the wood and how uniformly the stain is applied.
Once your stain has been applied and dried, your floor is ready for a polyurethane finish. Available in gloss, semi-gloss and satin textures, finishes are also available in a waterborne variety, which is more environmentally friendly and, with fewer VOCís (volatile organic compounds), they are healthier for you and your family.
In most cases we will need to apply more than one coat of finish. To do so, we lightly sand the previous coat and wipe it clean before applying the new coat.

There are many options and possibilities when it comes to hardwood flooring installation. Few of the most common types include:
All of the above are either nailed or glued down on top of existing sub-floor. In condominiums or commercial properties where sub-floor consists of concrete, plywood is applied on top of the slab in order to allow for nailing of the floor. All glued down floors can be directly applied on top of the concrete. See diagrams below outlining different floor types, installation techniques as well as examples of transition and finishing trims commonly used.
